Cork Examiner - Friday 26 June 1908: The bell, which is one of the largest in Ireland, was cast to the order of Venerable Archdeacon Hatch, D.D., P.P. by Mr Matthew O’Byrne, Fountain Head Bell Foundry, James street, Dublin. It measures 16 feet 3 inches (sic) in circumference, stands 5 feet 10 inches high, and weighs 47 cwt. It is cast on the same lines, and from the same model as the great bell which was cast last year to the order of his Grace the Archbishop of Dublin, for the Pro-Cathedral, Marlboro’ street, Dublin. Its note is a true C natural, the harmonics are perfect, and when the bell is struck by the clapper the air for miles around is filled with music, rich, solemn and impressive. The bell is fitted up with Mr. O’Byrne’s patient rotary iron and steel mountings, which are the best in existence, and by means of which it can be turned round at any time to allow the tongue to strike on a new part, instead of continually striking on one spot, thus preserving the true note of the bell, and preventing it from getting cracked, which has been the fate of many a fine old bell hung on the old fashioned system.
