Evening Herald (Dublin) - Wednesday 31 July 1907 THE PRO-CATHEDRAL. New Bell The Gift of the Archbishop At 12 o’clock yesterday the interesting ceremony of blessing a new bell for the Pro-Cathedral, Dublin, was performed by his Grace the Archbishop. It was found necessary to remove the old bell recently owing to a rift appearing on the surface which destroyed its tone, and soon would have caused it to fall asunder. The old bell had historic associations. It was the first bell to ring the Angelus after the long silence of the penal days. The material of this remarkable bell has been used in the recasting of its successor. The new bell weighing nearly 2½ tons, is decorated by the Coat of Arms of his Grace the Archbishop, and the old Irish emblems, the Celtic cross and harp. It is a beautiful specimen of the bell foundry art, and reflects great credit on the skill and craftsmanship of Mr. O’Byrne, bell founder, James’s street. The bell is the magnificent gift of his Grace the Archbishop to the Pro-Cathedral. The following is the inscription on the bell:- Maria Ave Tibi Cui ab originis labe fatiscentem die II Julii MCBBBVII integre refusam et in pristinam formam restitutam itrum Tibi Virgini Immaculatæ me dedicavit Gulielmus Archiepiscopus Dublinensis.
