Overview and sources: Job book 67 p.259 - 1888, 3 bells (hour and quarters), 57-3-0 in C
Tuning: The notes are those of bells 1, 4 and 8 in an octave. The partial tones were not recorded at the time of manufacture, but Taylors analysed the hour bell on 8 November and recorded some of the partials against the original job book entry
Casting dates: Hour bell cast 28 March 1888, quarter bells 4 April 1888
Completion and invoicing: Completed 19 May 1888 and invoiced same date (daybook 5 p.550) to the Senate, Glasgow University. The total cost was £759.9.6. including £619 for the bells, £87 for framework and fittings, £16.13.3 for fixing, £31.10.6 for carriage, and £5.5.0. for “instructing the porters in chiming”.
Inscriptions: No record of any inscriptions (the inscription book series only starts in late-1888).
Hangings: The bells were originally hung with wooden stocks, gudgeons and bearings – but probably of the Grimthorpe “wedge” type (for swing-chiming – as on Worcester Bourdon). The job book includes sizes but the columns for “levers” is left blank. Assume they were only used at clock bells really, but the entry re instructing in chiming seems to suggest some other method of sounding the bells was available.
In 2015 the University placed an order with Taylors for the complete restoration of the installation. The bell frame was stripped down, treated and then re-painted. New headstocks were manufactured and provided, together with new electro-magnetic chiming hammers and Apollo Unit (website “Work in Progress”, October 2015)
