[5]History of the bell
The bell was the former tenor of a ring of six in the demolished church of Holy Trinity (alias Christ Church), King’s Square. It was transferred to York Minster for storage in 1937 along with the other bells on demolition of the church. The bells were transferred to Loughborough in 1940 when the back two were tuned and weighed by Taylors in 1940. The weight of this bell before was 12-2-23, weight after was 12-1-3. Two trebles were cast to add to the ring of 6 for St Barnabas, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, but this project never materialised. The ring was dispersed in 1972. The canons were removed from the bell and it went to the Roman Catholic Carmelite Order at Hazlewood Castle. When the Order sold Hazlewood Castle in October 1996, the bell became the property of The Trustees of The York Bell Fund to be used as part of a possible future scheme in York. In 2016 the bell was put on display at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in York, hung just high enough to allow it to be chimed with a small hammer. At some point later, it was moved again, to a position outside Holy Trinity, Micklegate. [ex inf The Bells of York
