[2]Report on a visit in 1969 by Richard Johnston
The following may be of interest to someone.
I visited this church and inspected the bells on 2 July 1969 for the then churchwarden who wanted to know whether they were ringable or not.
At the time they were still hung for full circle ringing and had wheels in reasonable useable condition, and ropes, but the ropes were hardly useable.
The bells and fittings were ok, apart from the fact that some of the wooden cap boards that cover the bearings (see photo at http://www.riponandleedsbells.org.uk/horsehouse.htm) were in a poor (part rotten) state and were not capable of preventing the gudgeons lifting.
I rang each bell up by hand in the belfry to above frame height, and they behaved normally, and clappered as normnal.
However, the treble jumped its bearings when well up, and then rolled to and fro along the frame edges, which was a bit iffy at the upper edges as regards rot. Nevertheless I brought the bell to a stop without further incident and with the assistance of another man lifted the bell back into its bearings.
I told the churchwarden that the bells were ok for low chiming as they were, but would need the bearing cap boards would need replacement before allowing swing chiming or ringing fully up.
The bells were tonally satisfactory and what you would would expect from this founder. I didn’t have equipment with me to do any measurements.
