[1]History of the bell
The bell was the former 4th of a ring of six in the demolished church of Holy Trinity (alias Christ Church), King’s Square. It was transferred to York Minster for storage in 1937 along with the other 6 bells on demolition of the church. The bells were transferred to Loughborough in 1940 when the back 2 were tuned and weighed by Taylors in 1940. The weight of this bell as received was 7-1-12 and when dispatched was 7-0-25. This is an anomaly as the Taylor records suggest this bell wasn’t tuned, so either it was in fact tuned, or the second weighing took place after canons were removed. Two trebles were cast to add to the ring of 6 for St Barnabas, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, but this project never materialised. The ring was dispersed in 1972. The bell was then intended for the new church of St John, Brandsholme, Sutton, Hull at which point the canons were removed from the bell. The bell never went here and instead went to the Roman Catholic Carmelite Order at Hazlewood Castle. When the Order sold Hazlewood Castle in October 1996, the bell became the property of The Trustees of The York Bell Fund to be used as part of a possible future scheme in York. In 2016 the bell was put on display at St Paul’s Bookshop and in 2019 moved to a position under the tower inside the church at St Lawrence church in York, hung just high enough to allow it to be chimed with a small hammer.
